12 Days of Christmas DIY Challenges ~ Something to Wear

Christmas is a good excuse for something new to wear. Given it may be worn for such a short time, the less money spent the better. Alternatively, making a garment that can be worn year round overcomes that problem - Christmassy without being too Christmassy.

Make some wearable items for Christmas - clothing, hair accessories, jewellery ~ Threading My Way

Today's challenge - Challenge #8
Make something to wear for Christmas using what you have in your house. This could be a plain clothing item transformed into a Christmassy one, or jewellery, accessories, etc. Jill sets the challenge...

Totally loving Jill's thigh length boots in the video. Not that I'd be wearing something like that for a hot Aussie Christmas.

Christmas shorts and appliquéd t-shirt set ~ Threading My Way

One Christmas I made Little Mister a shorts and t-shirt set. I appliquéd a star onto a black, store bought t-shirt, then embellished with some hand stitching. It was a very quick and inexpensive way to make a plain t-shirt Christmassy. I wrote a tutorial on how to do the star appliqué and embellishing.

The shorts I made from scratch and added a matching band in Christmassy colours. Little Mister wore those shorts to death! The t-shirt not so much. To add the band to a shorts pattern, check out adding a leg band to a pair of shorts.

Christmas shorts and tee set. Hand appliquéd Christmas tree ~ Threading My Way

The same Christmas I made a shorts and t-shirt set for Little Miss. She loved the t-shirt and wore it a lot, well after Christmas was over. The shorts on the hand, she reluctantly wore just for Christmas day. I made some matching hair accessories which were well liked, too.

Christmas Skirt ~ Threading My Way

This skirt is the most time consuming Christmas garment I've made. Well worth it, though, as Little Miss wore the skirt till it no longer fitted her. Again, Christmassy colours and all the fabric came from my stash.

Now this flower hair tie wasn't made for Christmas, but it could have been with the red and green colours.

Check out the following wearable Christmassy ideas...

Now it's over to you. Have you ever made wearable items for Christmas? Add your projects (past and present) to the link party. It will remain open till Christmas.

  1. That skirt is adorable! You would think with how much I love Christmas I would have made something, but I haven't. I do have a penguin costume someone made me one year. I should wear it to our Christmas party. LOL

  2. I'll probably wear what I wore for Thanksgiving last month - a turkey carcass hat for me, and turkey drumsticks hairband for - well - nobody else would put on a festive hat, so I put it on Graci the golden retriever, who wore it happily. Her picture is now my desktop photo, LOL! My family, strangely, didn't think it was a fun thing to do - I thought it was a blast!
