Mini Log Cabins...

Way back in January, I joined in the It's a New Year Sewalong over at Sew Can She. To participate in the sewalong, you only had to make one mini log cabin and sew it into something. You could, of course, make more.

As the name implies, the blocks are tiny, measuring 4.5" square before sewing. Well, I wasn't going to stop at one. I could envisage a whole quilt made from mini log cabins. Four mini log cabins with sashing to make a larger block finishing at 9" square. Put some wider sashing between the blocks, add a border or two and I'd have a quilt top.

The biro and seam ripper give some perspective and show just how small the individual blocks really are.

I chose to do a light / dark design in two colour ways, using only fabric from my stash. Next time, I'd replace a couple of the light colours, that look a little dark. If you look closely at my Peter Rabbit quilt, you'll see a few fabric scraps left over from the mini log cabins. Yes, I started the Peter Rabbit quilt AFTER the mini log cabin quilt and the Peter Rabbit quilt is finished.

It didn't take as long as I thought it would, to whip up 36 mini log cabins and join them together to make 9 large blocks. However, as with any sewalong, there was a deadline; the end of the month. The thought of rushing madly to add sashing, borders, then baste, quilt and bind didn't appeal and so I stopped.

Why did I stop and not just continue at my own pace, forgetting the sewalong? I'm not sure, but instead I began the Peter Rabbit quilt, and then at some point the strip quilt was started. I have finished the strip quilt top. It's basted and ready to sew. Somewhere along the line I also began another quilt; a panel quilt that doesn't involve any piecing. It's also basted and ready to quilt.

So that makes three quilts started, but not finished. When I sew clothes, I almost always finish one garment before beginning the next. I've often wondered why quilters have so many Works in Progress going on at the same time. Now I know!!!

  1. Why do quilters have so many WIP's? Because it's FUN! LOL! I'm convinced it's because there are so many projects we want to do, that most of us can't restrict ourselves to one at a time --- as we're working on one, we're still majorly interested in this one, and that one, and that one, and oh yes - that one over there ------------> and we just can't help it :) There are certainly worse addictions!

  2. They look great Pam! I especially love the purple ones. One thing I've discovered when it comes to sewing - I'm terrible at working to deadlines. Takes all the fun out of it. I like to meander along at my own pace!

  3. this will make a lovely quilt, I love the purple blocks. I actually think it's illegal to start and finish a quilt without starting or working on at least 2 others in the mean time.

  4. Really nice colours. I think most sewers have more than one project on the go at any one time. .

  11. There are so many pretty ideas out there and too little time. I just cleared out my WiP list at the end of last year, which obviously means I have one remaining UFO and fabric piles for three more quilts just waiting for me to get my current quilt out the door! (This one has a deadline. :x ) Love your little log cabins! Pretty colors and such teeny tiny pieces.

    1. 60 UFOs... I'd need a new room to store them in ... LOL!!! I suppose as long as the finished tally is way ahead of the unfinished, all is good. Thanks for stopping by, LeeAnna.

  20. Love the purple! Don't sweat over a handful of WIPs. All artists have them. Creativity needs different outlets (ie. projects) at different times.
