What do you do with selvedges and long, thin offcuts of fabric? I used to throw them away, until I realised they're a great way to jazz up gift wrapping and much cheaper than ribbon.
Sometimes I make reusable fabric gift bags or even pillowcases to wrap presents, but there are times when paper is more suitable. I have a large roll of brown paper for such occasions, or, if there's any on hand, I'll use the kids' artwork. Shorter pieces of fabric can quickly be made into scrappy bows.
These are just simple ideas to reuse scraps of fabric. In the Hair Accessories link party, there are a few tutorials that show how to make some fabulous, spectacular bows. I'm sure these tutorials could be adapted to use scraps of fabric. My stockpile of fabric scraps is growing, so I think I'll give some of these tutorials a go and make my scrappy bows a little fancier.

OMG I've never thought of using those long skinny strips as ribbon - I save and savour and treasure my selvages, but I throw away really skinny strips of fabric (as well as the non-selvage selvage on the other side of the fabric - the side with no printing). Not any more - will reuse them now!

ReplyDeleteOh pat , this is a good idea. I give some of those pieces to a Quilter friend of mine who uses them for many things but esp for tassels, animals tails etc. I myself sometimes braid such pieces into cords which i use in many artifacts.
