Email etiquette...

More and more I find I am receiving emails from bloggers who host link parties. The vast majority do the correct thing and include a paragraph asking us to let them know if we don't want to receive the email. I don't mind receiving the emails at all, but do appreciate the fact that the sender acknowledges I mightn't want to receive them.

I do, however, object to receiving bulk emails, where my email address is visible to all. Again, most bloggers do the correct thing, but increasingly, I am receiving bulk emails with my email address in the To or Cc fields, where it can be seen by every recipient (often over 100) .

One quick way to keep email addresses private, is to put all the recipient's email addresses in the Bcc (blind carbon copy) field and put your own email address in the To field. That way, each person only sees your email address and their own.

There you have it... a quick little tip if you are sending bulk emails to other bloggers. Following email etiquette makes you look more professional.

  1. Thank you for sharring this tip. I don't send bulk e-mail, but it's interesting to know what Bcc is. I didn't know that.

  4. I concur 100% - I think I should send this post to a few people who INSIST on posting my address when they send their forwards to everybody in their address book! When they do that - half the time SOMEONE will "reply all" so I'm getting emails from people I don't know!

  6. Thanks for the tip, I'm one of those that did not know what was the Bcc. It's a good trick, I have so many things to see and learn on your blog, when I enter to your blog I can stay here for hours and always enjoy it. Thanks for all you do is appreciated.

  7. Great tip Pam. I actually just noticed a mass email come through like this and thought it was kind of lazy/rude. I have to admit it didn't occur to me people simply didn't know about the Bcc option! I'm sure I don't know things others take for granted- always great to read blog tips.
