Reusable Double Wine Bottle Bag ~ Gift Bag

I am so pleased with the wine bottle bags I've recently made. Each holds two bottles of wine, is easy to make and looks good, too.

When visiting friends for a meal, I almost always take a couple of bottles of wine. In times gone by, I usually left the wine in the brown paper bag from the shop. Recently, however, I've begun to put a little more thought into how I presented the wine, and have used the legs from denim jeans.

A couple of weeks ago I saw a really nifty idea at one of the link parties I visit - a double wine bottle gift bag. In no time at all, with the tutorial from Crafty Staci, I whipped up the wine bottle bag in the first photo, and gave it to a good friend when we lunched at her place.

I got to thinking, although intended as a gift bag, why not make some as bags to carry our own wine home from the shops. And so three more bags were whipped up - one more in the text fabric and two florals. I just adore that text fabric - The Wordsmith by Janet Clare, for Moda. That one's for Mr TMW. I didn't think he'd appreciate the florals.

And here's one bag in action in the back of my car, together with matching grocery bags. Well, almost matching - you'd think I would have used the same fabric for the handles. The colour is awful, but it's hard to take good photos in a dark carpark on a phone.

I modified the tutorial a little to make all four of my bags...
  • extra stitching to reinforce the seams. As with my grocery bags, I used the triple stitch on all seams for added strength. Because the bottles are glass, I still put a hand under the bag, just to be sure.
  • extend the divider from 6" to 8"
  • different construction for the handles. Cut to 5" wide and make like bias tape.
  • extra stitching to reinforce where handles join the bag - stitch back and forth a few times, as well as triple stitch for top seam.
  • reinforce the handles with stitching. I didn't add interfacing this time.
  • join the lining and exterior by leaving a gap and turning. See any of my bag or basket tutorials.

I know these won't be the last double wine bottle bags I make. How about you - how do you carry wine home from the shops?

  1. There is a wine shop in Florida that packs their bottles in a 4-bottle cloth bag. While visiting my sister, I was lucky enough to snag three of these and since I buy wine by the case, I always use these bags. That way, I avoid the boxes, the paper bags, and most importantly, the PLASTIC bags. I do love your double tote and think these would be wonderful gift bags so I'll be whipping up a few of those, too. Thanks!

  2. I need to make these for my shop. We're surrounded by awesome vinyards. ...and Crafti Staci is practically a neighbor even if I've never met her.

  3. These are great Pam, we buy most of our wine by the case and use supermarket wine bags if we come across an offer that is too good to.ignore. We frequently hand over bottles to our children when we visit so these bags would be perfect for that and handy for them to use afterwards.

  6. This is really useful. When I go to the grocery story and I buy bottles I never manage to keep them upright in the regular shopping bags.
