Showcasing ~ Luggage Tag Map Burlap Pillows ~ Tutorial

Today's showcased sewing tutorial is such a unique, fun idea - cushions (throw pillows) that are designed to look like luggage tags. Made from map fabric and hessian (burlap), they have a definite vintage charm.

Learn how to make fun, unique throw cushions in the shape of a luggage tag. Made from map fabric and burlap, they have a vintage vibe. Tutorial by Pillar Box Blue.

Claire, from Pillar Box Blue, shows how to make her fun luggage tag cushions. The detailed tutorial gives instructions on how to personalise each cushion, as well as adding grommets. Included in the post are links to several map crafts. Of course, you could make them in any fabric, but they do look great with the map fabric combined with hessian (burlap).

In Australia, and I think the U.K., pillows are something we rest our heads on while sleeping. Cushions, such as these luggage tag ones, are found on lounges, chairs and sofas.

In other parts of the world, throw pillows seem to be the equivalent of cushions, although they are sometimes referred to as pillows.

My American and Canadian friends, how do you differentiate between pillows for sleeping and pillows used on a lounge or chair?

  1. Wow, these are so neat. I visited her site to check out how they are made. From what I'm familiar with here in the USA, a cushion is something to sit on and a pillow is to rest your head on. Of course there are "throw" pillows which I think are in reference to an additional pillow to dress up a couch, a bed or lounge type furniture.

  3. These are brilliant Pam! You are right, pillows here are for sleeping on and cushions are for sitting on :)

  4. In the U. S. cushions are the loose squares on furniture whether it's the stuffed kind or pads for lawn furniture and dining-type chairs. Bed pillows, as in the ones you use to sleep at night, are generally just called pillows unless you need to differentiate what kind of pillows you might be buying or making. The term throw pillows covers most other pillows. The only exception that I can think of is that cylindrical shapes are called bolster pillows.

Interesting use of the drapery-size grommets in these tag pillows. Love that your blog continually introduces me to great sewing projects and blogs!
