Summer Down Under ~ A Tour of Our Garden

There hasn't been much sewing happening here at Threading My Way, not unless you count a few hand sewn alterations. Any spare time I've had has been spent out in our garden - my happy place.

With temperatures in excess of 42ºC (108ºF), it's been hot, hot, hot, so I have to get outside early to make the most of the cooler mornings.

The possums keep eating the vines as they reach the top of the pergola.

Having said that, today it's a lovely 25ºC (77ºF), with very light drizzly rain - just enough to wash the dirt off the leaves, but not enough to stop me venturing out.

Ferns and bromeliads seem to work well together.

Other parts of Australia are experiencing record breaking high temperatures. That was us last year!

A new pathway...

While on the other side of the world, I believe people have been told to stay indoors due to the very extreme low temperatures.

A rustic little corner of the garden...

Gardening, for those of us who enjoy it, is a year round activity in most parts of Australia - certainly where I live.

No grass when the kids lived here - it was swings, bike jumps and a digging patch.

At the moment, keeping up water to the plants is paramount. Luckily we have a few rainwater tanks to supplement the town water supply, as well as the treated wastewater system.

Ferns somehow make the garden seem cooler...

Our garden is extensive - just over ¾ acre - and it's not all finished yet. I have grand plans!!!

Ferns hanging from a tree...

Our garden is my happy place. It's a lot of work, but, hey, I'll never need to go to a gym for exercise.

No where is too small to plant...

Mr TMW, on the other hand, isn't so keen on the work part, but enjoys the finished product.

The photo is on an angle, not the archway.

If you follow along over on Instagram, you'll have seen many of these photos already. It's where I show photos of the garden, places we visit and the odd sewing photo.

As you can see, we don't stick to any one style of garden. It's a mix of everything.

While blogging and sewing have taken a back seat during the last 4½ months, they most definitely haven't been forgotten. Ideas are continually swimming around in my head. I just have to get my head into the right space to sit down and implement them - oh, and find the time.

Love that view!!!

In the meantime, I'm out to the garden to plant some grass runners. What are you up to in your little corner of the world?

... Pam

  1. Your garden is lovely and it seems to me, that taking walks or just sitting there must be very calming :-)

    1. Thank you, Helen. No matter what I'm up to, I try and stroll around the garden everyday, as it is very relaxing.

  2. Loving your garden tour. Everything is so beautiful.
It's a bit warmer here today, but yesterday morning it was 4 degrees Farenheit. That's -15 Celcius! Brrrrr! And I'm not even in a cold part of the country.

  3. I just heard about some of the wild temperatures in Aussie yesterday on our news. The numbers are as crazy as some of the cold temperatures they are seeing through the mid-US. I personally just spent a half hour shovelling snow in a "balmy" -19C temperature and am thankful that it's not worse.

Your garden is like the complete opposite of what I see now, but truth be told, I couldn't deal with the constant heat.

  5. Sorry to hear about your possums - here in North Carolina in the Southeast of the States, we have Grey squirrels that like to dig up the garden. Lately, we have been trying to stay warm - but, like you, we had a decent day today - it got up to 59* F. which is really nice for the latter part of Winter. Hang in there, I guess your Fall is not far off now.

    1. I do complain about our possums, but on the other hand, I do like that they make their home in our garden. I was only saying today, that without our garden, we wouldn't have all the little birds that we do. At least we don't have squirrels digging up the garden.

  6. The pictures of your garden are a wonderful sight, we are freezing in Canada and the winds are wicked! Thank you for reminding me Spring will come!

    1. Thank you, Sheila. Think I'd prefer our heat to your freezing cold. Bring on Spring for you, and Autumn for me.

  7. Have now just seen your summer garden and it's so beautiful. My Dad had a huge garden - 2 acres - but the flowers were very different and he had a huge veggie patch, grew grapes, tomatoes and other items. I think that's where my brother got his love of gardening together with his wife. It's supposed to me summer here but its about 12 C degrees. Keep on sewing and gardening. Liz

    1. Thank you, Liz. 2 acres is a huge garden - I'd be in heaven, although we have ¾ acre, and it's still not all under control. One day I am going to have a vegie garden!!! Just have to clear a pile of bricks away first. Last year in England (not sure about Scotland) you had record Summer temperatures. I had relatives on holidays and the temps were 30ºC +. It's 13ºC here today and drizzling rain - not enough to do anything about the drought - just enough to wash a little dust off the plants.
