Scrap Busting ~ Flannelette Quilt

Another quilt finished! This was such a quick make, and I'm really happy with the result, especially given that the top is made entirely from flannelette scraps.

Making this quilt has taken care of the smallish scraps of flannelette in my stash. The 4" squares were placed in random order, forming a quilt that ended up at 35" x 35" - so the right size for a small lap quilt.

In the past I have avoided placing blocks or squares together, always inserting sashing in between - thus eliminating the possibility of mis-matching points and seams not lined up.

I figured it was time to step out of my comfort zone, and I have to say I am pleased with the result. They're not all perfect, but the recipient's not going to care, or even notice.

The trick was to pin at each seam, of course removing the pins, so as not to sew over them. Connecting Threads have a great tutorial showing how to piece charm squares.

The backing fabric is Paper Dolls by Sheryl Rae Marquez for Windham Fabrics. As children, we used to love playing with paper dolls. Do kids do that now? Looking back, it doesn't seem as if it would be much fun, but it used to hold our interest for long stretches of time.

Super cute fabric, isn't it. I fell in love with the fabric a few years ago, and purchased a whole bolt from the U.S., when the exchange rate worked more in my favour and when shipping was cheaper.

I can see more quilts of a similar size in my future, whether they be charm squares or scrappy. The straight line quilting, on either side of each seam, was a breeze due to the small size.

In fact, the small size makes everything easier. I even pin basted on my sewing table, and it's my best backing yet!!!

Sewing for Charity Australia will forward my latest quilt on to someone in need - definitely scrap busting, feel good sewing.

  2. O yes we played with paper dolls on the floor of my grandmothers sewing room - she saved little book sets of them for us, sometimes we cut them out and I remember a press out precut version. Thank you so much for the memory, the quilt is perfect and it has taken me back to Sunday’s spent in grandmas room while she spent the afternoon talking with my mother at the kitchen table.

    1. Oh, Joy - now that you've twigged my memory, I can remember both press out precut and cutting our own. Ahhh... the memories.

  3. Lap quilts are so nice to have and a little quicker to quilt than bed-sized quilts. I love that paper doll fabric. I remember playing with paper dolls. I imagine today's generation would wonder why we did that now. LOL

  4. I sure do remember playing paper dolls, it was the best fun ever!! My favourite was Janet from the Lennon Sisters, I don't think you are old enough to remember them though, they were singers and Janet was the youngest, I used to love to design clothes for them and colour them in. The best gift in the whole world was a new package of paper dolls!! :) Thanks for that lovely trip down memory lane!! Your little quilt is really pretty!

  5. I certainly did play with paper dolls - that was a very long time ago, lol. Sweet quilt - some little girl will be happy to snuggle with it :)
My preferred construction method doesn't include sashes - I like the quick simple random block placement design that you've done this time around. Grabbing a random block from a pile is a stressfree and happy way to make the quilt top :D

  6. This is great! I did play with paper dolls a little but the little tabs annoyed me. I have some paper dolls fabric I used in quiet books (the undressed dolls and clothes separately) and my girls love those pages!
