Joint Effort ~ Christmas Present Quilt

I have a quilt to show you today - one that was finished in time for Christmas in 2016. But I didn't do all the work. This was a collaborative effort with my daughter.

The quilt began life as a charm pack. By the time it was presented to me, the squares had been sewn into strips.

Four years ago, my daughter began playing - arranging colours and patterns, fully intending to turn it into her first quilt. Life got in the way, and she decided to hand the job over to me.

Seven rows of six squares and the mauve fabric - the creative work was done.

She was specific about what she did and didn't want, so not much thinking needed on my part. And, the method chosen cut down on the work involved if I'd followed the traditional route.

Instead of cutting the mauve into strips and piecing the whole lot together, the rows of squares are simply appliquéd, leaving the pinked edges to give a lovely frayed look over time.

It normally takes me ages to co-ordinate fabrics, whether from my stash or the shop. I knew I needed something with a very small print, and in a totally different colour to the front. It took next to no time to find the polka dot backing fabric in my stash.

A slip with the scissors while cutting, prevented me from using the backing as self binding. A good thing, I think, as the bone binding looks much better than the polka dot would have.

Finishing at 33" x 42", it's the perfect size for snuggling under while watching TV.

One thing I forgot, though - there's no label. When I made my first quilt, I didn't even know to add a label. All quilts since then had one, though. Must rectify the omission with the first and last.

It gives me great pleasure to see this quilt sitting on the lounge every time I go down to my daughter's.

Have you ever worked on a quilt with someone else?

I'll be adding this quilt to the Quilting & Patchwork link party here at Threading My Way.

  1. Very pretty! I love the periwinkle strips. So you just take your pieced squares and sew them on top of the periwinkle strips and then pink the edges? Love it.

    1. Thanks, Kathy. Sorry for the late reply. I can see from the next blog post that it's answered your questions.

  2. You all (as we say in Kentucky) did a great job! Really like the idea of leaving the pinked edges.

  3. I have a lot of charm packs to use up. I really like they way you left the pinked edges out.

  4. That's lovely, well done! I have started quilting again. But working with such a big and often heavy piece is still very daunting!
