Satin Drawstring Gift Bags

Drawstring gift bags have become my favourite way to wrap presents. Not only are they quick and easy to make, but the end result is two gifts in one. I've just finished another two, this time made with beautiful satin fabric.

Satin Drawstring Gift Bags ~ Threading My Way

I modified the Drawstring Gift Bag tutorial...
  • Cut fabric to 13" x 9" (33cm x 23cm)
  • Measure 1¼" and ½" from the top when making the hole for the drawstring casing.
  • Measure 1" from the corner seams when making the boxed corners. ie; the corner will end up at 2".

Satin fabric frays a lot, so all seams are zig zagged. An overlocker (serger) would do just as well.

Each bag is lined with crepe fabric - not too slippery against the satin, but still looks good. One drawstring is t-shirt yarn and the other is a cord most probably from a pair of shorts. I always take drawstring cords out as soon as I get pants or shorts home. Ha, ha.. makes for a flatter tummy without the bulge of a cord.

What's inside the bags you might ask? Well, its a small rolled up towel. I haven't made the presents yet. Round the wrong way, I know. Should have done the presents first. That's how I roll here - sew what I like, when I feel like it. Means I'll have to be exact with measurements for the presents, though. Stay tuned...

What's your favourite way to wrap presents? If you like the idea of drawstring bags for gift bags...

  1. Well, don't tell anyone, but my favourite way to wrap presents is to have them shipped for free via Amazon Prime - LOL! Just kidding - sort of! I just finished a drawstring bag yesterday - it was a use-up-scraps project so it wasn't sized for anything in particular - it will just go into my stash of bags to use as the need arises :) My favourite way to wrap gifts IS fabric bags - they can be reused, they can be themed to the recipient or gift (or made with fabric to match the gift!), they use up stash, they don't create garbage - they're win/win/win/win!

  3. One of the first things I ever sewed was a satin drawstring bag for my sister for prom. I am sure I would laugh seeing it now, but it was only needed for one night. :) Of course, I laugh thinking of the dress she wore, too. :)

I love your satin bag for gift wrapping! It is much better than the paper gift bags!

  4. You can never have too many drawstring bags :) And this cute print is perfect as a gift bag. Great idea of using recycled materials for the cords!

  9. This is such a good idea. I really love the fabric and the patern on it, with its bright red and kitty patterns.

  10. Another gorgeous bag, you must be so organised with them this year. I love bags for wrapping too, partly because my paper wrapping skills are so rubbish!
