Every July, the girls at Simple Simon and Company host Skirting the Issue - an event encouraging others to sew skirts for girls in foster care. This year they're adding quilts and blankets, too.
The other day I was feeling a bit under the weather and I needed some sewing that didn't require too much thought. It doesn't get much easier than sewing a simple gathered skirt, and so I whipped up five skirts that evening.
This Amy Butler fabric has been in my stash for ages. One yard was just the right amount for two size 3 skirts.
Some Spoonflower fabric for this little size 2. This particular design doesn't seem to be available any more.
Another size 2, this time with left overs from The Paper Bag Princess skirt.
And a size 6, with left overs from Design Your Own Pinny.
Seriously, choosing the fabric from my stash takes as long as sewing up a skirt. If you've never sewn one before, I've written up a tutorial for making a simple gathered skirt.
This is my third year joining in with Skirting the Issue...
These skirts will be making their way to Angels for the Forgotten, a group in NSW, Australia, providing tangible support to help change the experiences of those in crisis situations. They assist children and families who have experienced the foster care system, domestic violence and homelessness.
For me, this was feel good, stash busting sewing - not that this made much of a dent in my stash.

I love the fabric you chose!
ReplyDeleteOh those are SO pretty - my favourite print is the pretty pink one in the last photo :) Some little girls are going to be very happy - I imagine they'll spin around in their new finery, and smile ... aaaaaaaaaaah :)
ReplyDeleteThose little skirts are so pretty, Pam! The fabrice are all wonderfully colorful. Perfect for little girls! Your tutorial is very good too and would make the skirt easy to assemble, even for the inexperienced sewer. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteA great project for a great cause, Pam. Your skirts will bring cheer to some well-deserved little ladies. I'm pondering a skirt project myself but will be making it for me. ;-)
ReplyDeletePam, those skirts are darling. You are amazing. Thank you so so very much for always sewing along with us. We appreciate it.
