Naughts and Crosses Travel Game ~ Tic Tac Toe

Naughts and crosses is a simple paper and pencil game, that has been played by generations of kids. Here in Australia we call it naughts and crosses, but in many parts of the world it is referred to as tic tac toe. I was inspired by Sally, from Wonky Patchwork, to make a travel version of the game in a drawstring bag.

You simply have to check out Sally's Tic Tac Toe game. The counters are pieces of sea glass - a brilliant idea.

All you need to make a travel naughts and crosses game, is a simple drawstring bag with grid lines, and some counters.

I've made the bag with my own Drawstring Gift Bag tutorial. However, I didn't box the corners, enabling the bag to lie flatter for the counters to sit on.

Before stitching up the bag, I sewed the grid lines onto the front of each bag - satin ribbon for one, and bias tape for the other.

The drawstrings are just some offcuts I had in my stash. The flatter the drawstring the better. The grey drawstring works slightly better as the buttons don't slide off as easily.

Sadly I don't have any pretty sea glass, but I do have a tonne of buttons.

Two little Christmas gifts made!!! And such an easy sew!!! Actually, I should have three bags made, but I totally mucked up the first one. Ha, ha... sometimes the easiest sewing is where I make mistakes, maybe because I'm not concentrating.

Fiona from Celtic Thistle Stitches is helping us to get organised for Christmas, with the Ho Ho Ho and on We Sew, monthly link parties. This month the link up is over at Red Letter Quilts, where Heidi has a tutorial showing how to make a modern trees chenille rug.

One lucky person will win a pattern of their choice from Sew Sweetness. If you want to be the lucky winner of one of Sara's bag patterns, all you need to do is link up your Christmas / Holiday makes for this month.

  7. Noughts and crosses is such a great classic. Like the idea of using sea glass. Especially as I have collected even more this summer. Your bags make perfect Christmas gifts.

  8. When going on a trip, my children always got bored on the road. However, now I know what to do with them the next time we go on a road trip in a Rental24.co.uk car rental. I think my kids will love it!

  9. Hey, I was looking for a way to relax after a long day and stumbled upon spinmama. I decided to try the Plinko game just for fun. At first, my bets didn’t go anywhere, and I felt like quitting, but then I went a bit higher and landed a lucky round that covered my losses. The thrill of that win kept me playing a few more rounds, and now it’s my little go-to escape whenever I need a quick break from work.

11. Making the storage bag double as the board is a thoughtful way to keep a travel game together. The flat grid and distinct counters also show how much clear presentation matters in a simple game. For someone interested in a more involved board game after naughts and crosses, 将棋ゲーム is a browser example of Japanese chess to explore. The rules are different, but starting with a clearly arranged board and explaining one turn at a time remains useful.
