Mini Log Cabin Quilt ~ Another UFO Finished

Finally - I've finished my mini log cabin quilt. And I am so pleased with how it's turned out!!! It's taken nearly four years from start to finish, but I've done it, and it feels good.

Mini Log Cabin Quilt ~ Threading My Way

This quilt began when I took part in a mini log cabin sew along over at Sew Can She. The only requirement of the sew along, was to make one mini log cabin, then turn it into something. I knew straight away that I'd make a quilt.

As the name suggests, the mini log cabins really are tiny, measuring only 4½" as stand alone blocks.

Here's how I put everything together, to make a quilt ending up at 39" x 39"...
  • Sew 36 mini log cabins - instructions over at Sew Can She
  • Join sets of 4 mini log cabins into a larger blocks with sashing cut to 1" (resulting blocks measure 9")
  • Join 9" blocks with sashing cut to 1½"
  • Add a border cut to 2½"
  • Add a border cut to 4"

I went with lines of wavy stitching - easy to do and looks rather effective. It's by no means perfect, but I'm getting better. The front lies nice and flat, the back not so much - all part of the learning curve.

I think (?) I need to spend more time sandwiching the three layers together, getting the backing taut. Any suggestions welcome.

Rather than cut binding, I've used the backing fabric, loosely following Cluck Cluck Cluck Sew's tutorial. Even though I wanted a quick finish, I hand sewed the binding instead of machining. If I'd machine stitched, the back wouldn't have looked right with the combination of the binding and quilting stitches.

Mini Log Cabin Quilt ~ Threading My Way

When I began sewing the mini log cabins, I fully intended to sew the quilt for myself. Somewhere along the line I decided that it would go to charity, and kept with that thought right up until it was finished.

Proudly showing it off to Mr TMW, and he enquired who it was going to, saying he really liked it and they were his colours.

I'd previously talked to Mr TMW about making him a quilt, but he was less than enthusiastic - I think because he was worried he mightn't like it, and he wouldn't want to hurt my feelings. Nor would he want to use it if he didn't like it. A bit of a quandary for him.

And so I asked if he'd like the mini log cabin quilt. Yes, please! Totally made my day!!!

Do you know where your quilts are headed when you begin sewing them?

I shopped from my stash to make this quilt - every piece of fabric, even the backing. This is a feel good quilt in so many ways.

You can read more about the making of this quilt...

I'll be adding the mini log cabin quilt to the Quilting & Patchwork link party, here at Threading My Way.

  1. Love it, Pam. The colours appeal to me too (my hubby likes to say my favourite colour is purple but that's really not so) and so much a bonus when it can be a gift for someone special who actually wants it. Such a labour of love! Congrats on seeing it done after four years.

  4. Nice log cabin, Pam - and extra nice that you were able to make it from stash! I bet you didn't notice much of a stash reduction though ... that's one of the perils of sewing - the stash seems to multiply when we're sleeping :D Mind you - the benefit is that - as you know - sometimes you can shop stash and finish an entire project!

  5. Congratulations on finishing. It looks great and I love the colors you used. Quilting is something I've been meaning to try for a long time and never did because if I started a quilt I'm pretty sure it would take me way longer than four years to finish...
Thank you for joining The Really Crafty Link Party this week. Pinned!

  6. Wow Pam, it's just lovely. 4 years is quite a long term project then!
Getting partners on board with craft projects can be a challenge (mine was very suspicious about the art I did for our dinning room recently until it was finished and he gave it his approval) so well done on this one. I'm not surprised though, it's fab.
