Using fabric scraps left over from another project, Kellie pieced and quilted an adorable patchwork bag, giving it away as a present to her lucky sister.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Kellie is an experienced seamstress, so I'm flattered by her comment...</div><blockquote><i>Pam’s tutorial instructions are so thorough that you can’t help but turn out a polished little bag.</i></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The tutorial for the <a href="https://www.threadingmyway.com/2013/12/fabric-basket-with-drawstring-top.html" target="_blank">Drawstring Fabric Basket with Handles</a> was written over seven years ago. At the time I made two baskets as presents - one to <a href="https://www.threadingmyway.com/2013/11/fabric-baskets-for-boys.html" target="_blank">store matchbox cars</a>, and the other for <a href="https://www.threadingmyway.com/2013/11/fabric-baskets-for-girls.html" target="_blank">storing craft gear</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Since then I've made one for me. Initially it was a <a href="https://www.threadingmyway.com/2017/03/fabric-sewing-basket-with-drawstring-top.html" target="_blank">sewing basket</a> to take to quilting retreats, but now it stores fabric scraps - I throw scraps in as I sew, ready to sort when I have time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Over the years, readers have shown me many bags which have served many different purposes... knitting bag, lunch tote, small toy storage, pencil case, gift basket, to name a few:<br />

Scrunchies have made a comeback. Whether they be sewn from fabric or crocheted, scrunchies are once again a fashionable hair accessory. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="http://howling-liz.blogspot.com/2020/07/crocheted-scrunchies.html" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="485" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGtJDzhqNyNVDR1sjK1RwaigeAHGygzcZ0nbnL9PwOtyW085pT6P15s_JDJvMaFpGhA2aWNk1X0-lFzfyou7MilxqNbMnM-TotO5L7Sfmw3arnP7VoNp_RWZ-n2aSmRnOpAbCmYHwU_afb/d/crochet_scrunchies_how_make_pattern.jpg" /></a></div></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Liz, from <i>Howling at the Moon</i>, whipped up her super cute <a href="http://howling-liz.blogspot.com/2020/07/crocheted-scrunchies.html" target="_blank">crocheted scrunchies</a> in an evening. She has written instructions so you can make some, too.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Providing you crochet, that is. It's been a long time since I've done any crocheting, and then it was just simple granny squares for a blanket. Not sure that I like the term <i>granny</i> squares any more. Funny how our perceptions change over time.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #990000;">Do you crochet?</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Liz added her crocheted scrunchies to the <a href="https://www.threadingmyway.com/2012/01/threading-your-way-hair-accessories.html" target="_blank">Hair Accessories</a> link party. Stephanie, from <i>Swoodson Says</i>, shows how to mend jeans by <a href="https://swoodsonsays.com/sew-on-patches-for-jeans-sashiko-style/" target="_blank">hand stitching an appliqué over the worn out patch</a>. The sashiko style stitching embellishes the appliqué, in this case, a beetle pattern which is a free download. This cute beetle would look great on kids' jeans!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Since then I've made one for me. Initially it was a <a href="https://www.threadingmyway.com/2017/03/fabric-sewing-basket-with-drawstring-top.html" target="_blank">sewing basket</a> to take to quilting retreats, but now it stores fabric scraps. It lives on my sewing table and I throw scraps in as I sew, ready to sort when I have time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Over the years, readers have shown me many bags which have served many different purposes... knitting bag, lunch tote, small toy storage, pencil case, gift basket, to name a few:<br />

Each tea towel is made from two fat quarters. Hand sewn sashiko stitching with Pearl cotton helps them to hold their shape, not to mention it adds a lovely touch.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<a name='more'></a>My <a href="https://www.threadingmyway.com/2012/06/denim-fabric-baskets-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Denim Jeans Fabric Basket Tutorial</a> was one of the first tutorials I ever wrote - way back in 2012. It's been viewed 598,000 times and Pinned 128,000 times. And because it was posted back in a time when lots of people left comments on blogs, there are 120 comments on the post. What I love <b>way</b> more than any numbers, however, is knowing people have found the tutorial helpful.<div><br /></div><div>One way to do that is to show me photos.<br />

What a great way to display a plant! The lining is the perfect colour for a basket holding a plant pot. The denim basket is sturdy and washable. I imagine you'd need to take the plant out of the basket to water it, although you could easily add a little saucer to the bottom.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Thanks for showing me how you upcycled an old pair of jeans, Wendy. How do you manage when you go to a sewing class or retreat? How do you get your sewing machine and all your gear from the car to the venue? Me, well - my bags precariously sit on top of my sewing machine, which is strapped to a trolley. Today's showcased tutorial solves that problem. It's a bag with a sleeve which fits over the trolley handles.</div>

If you can sew a straight line, you can whip up an unlined library, or book bag. This is a very easy project - perfect for someone who is new to sewing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

Here in Australia, Primary School aged children require a library bag to enable them to borrow books from the school library. Read on to see just how easy it is...</div>
<div>
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Materials</b></span>:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
Any reasonably sturdy fabric that is washable<br />
<div>
<ul>
<li>Two pieces of fabric: 16" x 13" <i>(41cm x 33cm)</i> - for the bag body</li>
<li>Two pieces of contrasting fabric: 16" x 2" <i>(41cm x 5cm)</i> - for the facing</li>
<li>Two pieces of fabric: 11½" x 4" <i>(30cm x 10cm)</i> - for the handles</li>
</ul>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<b>Finished Dimensions</b></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>15½" x 12½" <i>(39cm x 32cm)</i> </li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Instructions</b></span>:</div>
<div>
Read all instructions before you begin.</div>
<div>
<br />
All seams are ⅜"<i>(1cm)</i>, unless otherwise indicated.<br />
<br />
Basting <i>(hand sewing with a long stitch)</i>, is a good way to hold seams together while sewing two pieces of fabric together. The fabric won't move, and you don't have to worry about keeping pins away from the machine needle. Another good alternative is <a href="http://www.threadingmyway.com/2017/02/most-used-sewing-tools-wonder-clips.html" target="_blank">wonder clips</a>. <b>If you do use pins, remove them as you sew - keep them well away from the presser foot - don't sew over them!</b><br />
<b style="color: #6fa8dc;"><br /></b>
<b style="color: #6fa8dc;">Sew Seams</b><span style="color: #6fa8dc;">...</span><br />
<ul>
<li>Place the two pieces of fabric right sides together.</li>
<li>Sew down both side seams and across the bottom with a regular stitch.</li>
<li>Backstitch when stopping and starting</li>
<li>Neaten edges with an overlocker <i>(serger)</i> or zig zag stitch</li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<li>Sew the short ends of the facing.</li>
<li>Neaten.</li>
<li>Turn a ¼" <i>(6mm)</i> hem on the bottom of the facing - either press or stitch.</li>
<li>Place the right side of the facing on top of the right side of the bag, lining up the side seams and with the handles sandwiched between.</li>
<li>Face the seams in opposite directions.</li>
<li>Move the machine needle two notches to the left so the seam is slightly wider than ⅜"<i>(1cm)</i>. If your machine doesn't have this feature, just sew slightly wider than ⅜"<i>(1cm).</i></li>
<li>Sew back and forth over the handles a few times to reinforce.</li>
<li>Fold the facing to the wrong side.</li>
<li>Press the top edge of the bag.</li>
<li>Increase stitch length to 2.8</li>
<li>Topstitch ⅛" <i>(3mm)</i> from the edge, around the top of the bag.</li>
<li>Sew the the bottom edge of the facing in place.</li>

The photo above is of one of the other bags I made at the same time. It's the only photo showing the facing on a finished bag. If you look closely, you can see two lines of stitching at the hem. It looks nicer with one, but for speed I stitch the first turn over of the hem, rather than press.</div>

When I started this little blog, I had no idea that so many people would look at my sewing tutorials, let alone use them to make their own projects. Fast forward many years, and I still get a thrill every single time I see a photo of something made by using or modifying one of my <a href="https://www.threadingmyway.com/p/how-to.html" target="_blank">tutorials</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.threadingmyway.com/2012/05/fabric-basket-tutorial.html" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="530" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHxjSYdTIbioBSl8XQRM7M01Z3YeY-E3LcBCBaJSe8RQiu8NTZTsqd0rBpnUn3yemkFNK1K7naR6_JoktJCBbeEx3cfD7B_D45D1v5U76Unbu18AjHAYUU2usHKuo0ARv0XHyKdBE3r3l0/d/fabric_basket_tutorial.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>My <a href="https://www.threadingmyway.com/2012/05/fabric-basket-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Fabric Basket Tutorial</a> was written in 2012, less than 12 months after I began blogging. It's had 279,000 views and been Pinned 75,000 times. I find those numbers mind boggling, but seeing a basket made by one of my readers far surpasses that.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As you know, this year I had an absence of several months from the blog. During that time I checked in on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ThreadingMyWay/" target="_blank">Facebook</a> - even though I may not have been posting - and I sort of kept up with <a href="https://www.instagram.com/threadingmyway/" target="_blank">Instagram</a>. <a href="https://www.pinterest.com.au/frangipammie/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>, however, didn't get a look in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
When I did go back to Pinterest, I found what I thought was a new thing. People had posted photos of items that they had made under some of my pins, along with comments. Now, it's not a new thing, as some of those photos were added a long time ago. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Those people must have thought I was very rude, as I didn't even acknowledge their photos, let alone comment. I belatedly caught up!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Today I thought I'd show you three of my favourite baskets that were added to Pinterest. </div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://www.pinterest.com.au/sofa1/boards/" style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;" target="_blank">Patty</a> has co-ordinated the bright, fun fabric perfectly. Purple - it's one of my favourite colours. She commented... <i>So easy. Great tutorial</i>.<br />

<a href="https://www.pinterest.com.au/chrisd1105/boards/" target="_blank">Chris</a> commented... <i>I have been making baskets like this for a while now however mine never turned out exactly right. I’m always a bit embarrassed to give them to someone as a gift. Your pictures and instructions all of a sudden made a big difference! Thank you so much!</i><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I would never have thought to put two florals together. Chris' floral combination works beautifully.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Learning is a two way street. I now need to go and play with florals to see just what it is that enables two florals, of roughly the same size pattern, to co-ordinate so well. I think it must be to do with one being dark and the other light.<br />

<br />
<a href="https://www.pinterest.com.au/marialevick/boards/" target="_blank">Maria</a> modified the tutorial to add pockets... <i>I added pockets at each end just by bringing the corners round and sewing them back onto the box</i>. Such a clever idea!!! Another thing for me to play with, and a new technique to learn.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Don't you just love the Mickey Mouse fabric!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Fabric choices can make or break a project. For some, choosing the right fabrics is something they are instinctively good at. Others, like me, have to work at it. Over time, I find that I am getting better at <a href="https://www.threadingmyway.com/2014/06/co-ordinating-fabrics.html" target="_blank">co-ordinating fabrics</a> - practise makes perfect! Ha, ha.. I'll never be perfect, but my skills are definitely improving.</div>

<span style="color: #d52c1f;">Do you find it easy to put fabrics together?</span></div>

Fabric baskets are one of the easiest things to make. If you can sew a straight line, you can whip up a fabric basket. The <a href="https://www.threadingmyway.com/2012/05/fabric-basket-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Fabric Basket Tutorial</a> will show you how to make the baby shower basket, pictured above in green, and the pink sewing basket.</div>

On the weekend, I'll be <a href="https://www.threadingmyway.com/search/label/showcase" target="_blank">showcasing</a> two different ways to make fabric baskets. Stay tuned.</div>

Cheryl, from <i>Sew Can Do</i>, shows how to make a <a href="http://www.sewcando.com/2020/06/easy-any-size-baby-bubble-romper.html" target="_blank">Baby Bubble Romper</a>. There is a downloadable PDF pattern for size 3-6 months, or follow the very detailed instructions to make your own pattern in any size. The romper can be made with both woven cotton fabrics and cotton knits. It has a snap crotch for easy nappy <i>(diaper)</i> changes, is easy to get on and off and accommodates cloth nappies. </div>

All up I made four bags - two in the orange with white flowers and two in the brown. The brown is something old from my stash - no idea the type of fabric, or where I picked it up, and I don't particularly like it. Never-the-less, I have used it a couple of times. Think I'll use it to carry items next time I donate to an Op Shop <i>(Thrift Store)</i> - and donate it too. </div>

Carole, from <i>From My Carolina Home</i>, shows how to make a <a href="https://frommycarolinahome.com/2018/07/23/birdseed-bag-totes/" target="_blank">Bird Seed Bag Tote</a>. As the name implies, this easy to sew bag is made entirely from a bird seed bag. It's a win win - costs nothing and gives a second life to something normally thrown away.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I wish I knew where you could buy bird seed in bags like this in Australia. <font color="#d52c1f">If you know, leave me a comment.</font></div>
