Fringed Fabric Bookmarks

If you need a small gift that's quick and easy to sew, try fabric bookmarks. What's more, they only require scraps of fabric to make.

I've followed my own fringed fabric bookmark tutorial, omitting the embroidered flower.

I didn't time how long it took to make the two bookmarks, but seriously, there's only a few steps...
  • choose fabric
  • cut out fabric and interfacing
  • iron on interfacing
  • fray ends
  • sew three seams
  • turn
  • press

Couldn't be easier!

The fabric that I chose for the bookmarks is a Japanese cotton Op Shop find. I have no idea of the type of cotton, but it's a very loose weave. It has a bit of a hessian (burlap) look to it, but it's much finer, and not at all scratchy. Whatever the type of cotton, it's perfect for fraying.

There's still heaps of fabric left, as I scored 2m, and I've only cut into it once before to make a drawstring gift bag.

It feels good to cross another gift off the list. I'm ahead of schedule this year - all online purchases have been made, presents from the shops bought, Christmas cards written and gift tags completed. There's still some sewing to be done. Ha, ha... I'm being quite ambitious I think. See how I go - I'll keep you posted.

How are your Christmas preparations coming along?

... Pam

  1. Dear Pam, I love this. I remember learning to fray in about Grade 3 or 4, and recall spending many long hours fraying the edges of serviettes and tablecloths. It was quite the thing back then! I love your cute bookmark, and yes, what a great gift idea. Christmas prep is moving along smoothly here this year, largely to a year long gift creation programme. I've also snaffled a few bargains over the year, which means that apart from buying a gift card for my husband to put towards a new set of golf clubs, I'm done! Hoping you're heading towards a peaceful Christmas Day too. Love, Mimi xxx

    1. Serviettes, tablecloths, dressing table covers, shaving cloth for my Dad - everything was frayed, wasn't it, Mimi. Fond memories! Well done on being so organised for Christmas. I started in January with good intentions, and here I am still not organised.

  4. A quick gift and a lovely way to use scraps, win win! I know quite a few people who just can't get on board with the whole book reader thing and so need a book mark still. I prefer a real book but we do have a kindle, the problem I have is that if I fall asleep reading, the kindle is so thin it falls forward and hits me on the forehead! A real book tend to fall backwards #firstworldproblems #HandmadeMonday

  5. Dear Pam , i was delighted to read that , of course since your writing always delights me!!! And also since two years ago i made a present for somebody, whose principle in life is, that for every new item he gets, he moves another old one out of his house. After long thinking i decided an embroidered bookmark , won`t make him throw anything out!!! , and it was the right present!! . mirjam

  7. You sound more organised than me and all with homemade gifts! I love the look of these with the rustic cotton weave fabric and the fraying fringe is a real feature. Even my sewing skills might be up to this one!
