Most Used Sewing Tools ~ Point Turner

Anyone who sews great looking bags knows how to make corners that sit just right. Somewhere in the process of pushing the corner out to a fine point, you can be certain a tool or little gadget will be used. So, what do I use to turn points?

... a chopstick. Just a plain old chopstick from the kitchen - except it lives in my sewing room. The sides are smooth and the top is rounded, which makes it perfect for pushing out corners, without stretching or breaking the fabric or stitching.

On the odd occasion I have used the blue commercial point turner, but I find the tip is too thin and pointy for the projects I'm sewing. The chopstick does a better job for me.

On taking photos, I noticed that the point turner is also a button gauge - must check out how that works. Anyone know?

You can see I've been working with pre-loved denim jeans - an experiment that's worked out well. I'll show you soon.

What tips do you have for turning points when sewing?

    1. Hi Keren, I tried replying to your old sewlavie email, but it's no longer active...

How lovely to hear from you. Yep, I'm still sewing and blogging, and enjoying it. It's been five years now since I began my blog. Those challenges I did with you and Rikki in the early days of blogging were fun, and they gave me confidence in joining in with other crafters online.

I hope this finds you well.

  3. I use the blue point turner/button gauge all the time when sewing. The thicker end with the rounded recess I slip under my presser foot, the needle will fit in the recess, and that is how I start sewing on thicker hems, it slightly lifts the presser foot to the height of the seam so you don't get stuck sewing!!! :D I also love it as a point turner, but I've never used it as a button gauge! :)

    1. Next time I sew a bulky hem, I'll give this a go, Sheila. Thank you for taking the time to comment and share your knowledge. I appreciate it, as will others who read the post.

  4. I have one of those point turners and do use it, but often just use whatever comes to hand - knitting needles, scissors, pencils!! Sounds like I need to be a bit more disciplined, doesn't it :)
