Additions to the Stash

It's becoming known amongst my friends, friends of family, and friends of friends, that I'm more than happy to help when someone wants to get rid of fabric they no longer need. A few months ago now, a good friend gave me bags and bags of fabric that one of her relatives no longer wanted. Seriously, it half filled the boot of my car.

If you could have seen me rummaging through those bags of fabric - squeals of delight as I pulled out bundle after bundle of beautiful good quality fabric. I have no idea what I'll do with most of it, but it was too good not to keep.

I'm assuming the sheer fabric above is chiffon. I do know what I'll make with that - either a scarf or an infinity scarf.

This one is a mixed bag - calico, linen, crêpe are just the ones I know. The calico is destined to be turned into various sized drawstring bags for my friend and her husband. It's the least I can do to say thanks for putting her hand up to accept the fabrics.

These are the stretch fabrics. The top three will no doubt be used for the kids. The bottom one is perhaps a ponte; at least two metres. It's the right thickness for pants, but not my colour, so not sure what it will become. Can you think of a good use for thickish, mustard coloured knit fabric?

There's metres and metres of the shiny cat fabric, but again, I'm not sure what I'll do with it. What do you think? What would you use it for?

That's just a small portion of what I was given. There's metres of shiny fabrics that would be great for linings, and lot of white satins and laces. I'm sure there'd be enough to make a wedding dress.

The best score, however, is several metres of grey woollen fabric. It's very soft and would be perfect for a coat or jacket. It's nearing the end of Winter, so I'm going to take my time to find the perfect pattern. If you've sewn a jacket or coat and can recommend a good pattern, I'd love you to leave me a link.

  1. OMG! Lucky you! Shiny cat fabric might make a nice lining for something. I don't think you guys do Halloween down there, but that would definitely be a Halloween fabric here.

  3. On the subject of the cat fabric, I think any little girl would love a pair of sleep pants that are silky and shiny too!

As far as the mustard goes it is not my color but might use some pieces of it along with browns and such for a longer open front vest for fall.

  5. Ha ha +Amy Mayer! What about dying it another color like add blue to it & it'll turn a greenish color...or brown?

  6. Cat fabric would make a fantastic couple of kids flowing capes to wear at a school disco, halloween, school play or just for dress up. You are so fortunate to have friends thinking of you

  8. You sure have a great friend! The knit's color seems tricky to wear, but maybe you can make a simple tunic top or something, then accessorize with scarf and such. The cat print is so fun, and it will make a cute shiny dress for a little girl. Or if you are making the jacket in a kid size, it will be fun to use that as the lining!

  9. You got a treasure from your friend:) I think you can use the mustard thick fabric for bed spread or table cloth decorating with some fabric or crochet appliqué and add some lace etc. For cat fabric you may either use as a lining for bags or make cosmetics/accessory pouches if you want to display the print.

  10. What a great haul, I love it when I inherit fabric that way! For the mustard - how about a little girl's dress instead of pants, something quite simple, tunic dress or pinafore, something like that and with a bright, pretty applique on there to liven up the colour? Hard to tell exactly how mustardy it is on screen, it looks kind of beachy coloured on my monitor so I was thinking star fish, baby turtles or shells or some other beach themed applique? But if it's more mustard then maybe some flowers, or possibly a bee and a bit of hexie machine embroidery (if it's honey like mustard!) or possibly some fruit - a pear perhaps? The cat fabric is definitely saying Halloween to me - possibly treat bags? And for a coat pattern - I've just discovered https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/BigLittle, really cute and not too tricky patterns with wool - hats, scarves, mini boots and some really lovely coats. I love the coats on children, but there is also a version of the pixie hood coat for grown ups. And there's a pattern for a grown up cape about to be released (children's cape patterns already there). They have a FB page where you can see more too - https://www.facebook.com/groups/522332691240127/. Look forward to seeing what you do with it all.
