Quick and Easy Fabric Bookmarks

One of the projects showcased in this week's features, was a set of fabric bookmarks, made by Stephanie from Swoodson Says. I thought these would make great, little gifts - perfect for the book lovers in my family.

And so, following Stephanie's How to Make a Simple Fabric Bookmark tutorial, I whipped up a few, using scraps of fabric and remnants of a pair of pre-loved jeans. They are super quick and easy to make. Choosing which fabric scraps to use took more time than actually sewing the bookmarks.

Stephanie backed her bookmarks (photo directly above) with scraps of denim, but suggested jeans would be a good alternative. I have a tonne of pre-loved jeans waiting to be re-purposed - perfect!

Obviously left over from another project, I found some jeans fabric already cut into strips. I let the width of those strips determine the width of the bookmarks. A couple of mine are slightly wider than Stephanie's, the other three a little narrower.

I omitted the quilting lines from the tutorial. You could, however, use these as a way of practising free motion quilting.

Felt Valentine Bookmarks Tutorial by Kay, from Jerry and Kay

Quite some time ago, Kay, from Jerry and Kay, also added a set of bookmarks to the ongoing link parties - Threading Your Way with Threading My Way. Kay has a tutorial showing how to make her Valentines bookmarks with felt and embroidery.

Stephanie has also written a second tutorial, showing another two ways to make simple ten minute bookmarks.

If you are looking for a quick and easy sew, bookmarks might just fit the bill.  I've found a few fabric bookmark tutorials, ranging from super easy to ones involving embroidery and appliqué. I think some of the easy ones would be a great project for a child who is learning to sew.

I'm feeling super pleased with myself. Five more little gifts made for Christmas. They're not complicated or fancy schmancy. A quick and easy project - just what I needed as a break from the robot quilt

  2. I'm making a Route 66 quilt for my husband for our 20th Anniversary, this is a great idea for some of the left over pieces since I am fussy cutting.

  7. Sweet bookmarks - I'm glad that real PAPER books are still in style - I much prefer them over books on book readers :D Admittedly though, I buy some craft books for the Kindle because sometimes the price differential makes it really worthwhile - and sometimes - you just don't want to wait for the book to arrive! ;)

Oh - now that I'm thinking about it - I did beaded bookmarks as gifts a few years ago :) I got tiny little organza drawstring bags on Ebay for next to nothing, and used them to package the bookmarks - they were very popular :)
