Gathered Clutch...

This is my version of the Gathered Clutch, by Anna from Noodlehead. I've had the pattern for ages, but this is the first time I've made it up.

This little clutch is a thank you gift for one of my daughter's friends. She has very good taste in clothes and I often end up with many of the ones she no longer needs. Instead of taking them to an Op Shop (Thrift Store), she gives them to my daughter. Fortunately for me, most of the clothes are too large for my daughter and so I have my pick.

Not so long ago, in the bag of clothes, there was a beautiful coat, which was a perfect fit, so I thought it was about time I made a practical gesture to show my thanks.

Choosing fabrics is the part of sewing I like the least. It can take me ages to mix and match fabrics, till I am happy with the combination. This time I enlisted my daughter's help. We have quite different taste in fabrics, but there is also some overlap there and this was one of those occasions.

The Gathered Clutch is available as both a pattern and a tutorial. The pattern is not expensive, but I was lucky enough to buy it when it was on special. The instructions are detailed and easy to follow, with lots of photos.

The clutch came together very easily. The only problem I had was with the zipper. I chose the option of adding tabs at the ends of the zipper. The pattern stated quite clearly NOT to sew into the tabs, but I misjudged and ended up just catching the tab on the side with the wrist strap. On the other side, I've sewn into the tab even more.

I'm still happy with the clutch, but I know what to work on next time and how to fix it. I suppose I could have fixed it, but the thought of getting out my trusty unpicker, made the ends of the zipper seem not so bad.

The pattern suggests rounding the bottom corners, but I've left them square. There are also several options in the pattern and I've chosen to make the wrist strap. I can definitely see me using this pattern again.

This little Gathered Clutch will be joining 84 projects already added to the Purses, Clutches and Pouches link party here on Threading My Way.

  1. I have been storing this tutorial on one of my pinterest boards for quite some time. Zippered pouches are so versitile, they make great gifts. I like your version, I'm sure your clothes-donating-friend will too!

  8. Lovely Pam! I'd really like to make this as well. I think the style of wrist strap with the ring and lobster clip would be great for the nappy bags I make.

  9. It turned out great Pam. I am with you, choosing the fabrics for a project is my least favourite part. I don't know why, I love finding fabrics and choosing them to be part of my stash!

  10. Hi Pam,

What a lovely result! I also followed this tutorial a while ago too, and liked it. I carry my zippered bag in my bigger everyday bag and use it every day. I put the small stuff in it, that would otherwise get lost inside the bag... :-)
